Granted, it was a self-imposed quest, but that does not make it any less important. As a half- Jewish woman of a certain age living in NYC, it was kind of destined for me to go to Florida for the winter. However, family and my new excellent part-time job teaching math in a Catholic school (a story for another day) precludes me from becoming a true SnowBird. Hence, my weekend travel quest. And I have learned a few things that I would like to share.
South Beach is for the young, duh. Because only the young (or the stupid) like house music at the pool, the beach, and every restaurant, cafe, and coffee shop. Sorry, but it’s just a fact.
Miami Mid beach is nice and the bike /walking path is lovely. But those high rise condos make me very nervous. I read an entire Popular Mechanics article about why that one collapsed, and trust me, it could happen again. Along with a Putin nuclear attack and/or other end-of-the world scenarios , but still.
“Old Florida” motels still exist and they are really fun and low key and inexpensive. Until the toilet backs up into your bathtub. Because the buildings are old. Even though the owner is really nice and apologizes and gets a plumber to come out on a Saturday night. But you still saw poop water in your bathtub.
One needs exactly one pair of shorts and two bathing suits for a weekend at the beach. That’s it. Nothing else. Trust me.
If you are lucky enough to be a member of an airline/airport “club” take at least one apple and one orange with you ( or bring them from home.) It’s the only fruit you will eat for the next two days.
Worth it!!!
thanks for doing the reconnaissance/research!
Yes, but you still have to be in Florida in this equation!
